A little history about our Building/Restaurant
The Charles Mill is a historically significant building in Marion, IN, dating back to the mid 1800's. It is thought to be the oldest remaining structure in the city of Marion. The original structure was started in 1855 and was finished being built in 1856 by John and brother, Jacob Secrist. It was built for grist (flour) milling and was called The Marion Mill. In 1862, the dam was built on its present site.
The Secrist family operated the mill two years before James Charles came along wanting to rent it. James was born in 1835 in St. Keverne, Cornwall, England. He married Sarah Elma, the daughter of John Secrist. Charles eventually purchased the mill around 1881. In 1912, he sold the mill to Oliver M. Thomas and family, who operated it until 1956. The operation ceased as a grist mill at that time.
From 1956 through 1997, the mill housed a plethora of business entities including a beauty shop, camera store, sporting goods store, grocery store, general contractor operation, and a Save-On liquor store.
After being vacant for some time, current owner and Marion native, Geoff Eltzroth, bought the building in 2001, and began a massive remodel project to convert the facility into the present day Mill Restaurant. Although he tried to save as much of the original structure as possible, years of neglect and exposure to the elements prevented this goal structurally. He did however salvage the floor joists and re-introduced them into the stair treads and oak wood paneling you see around the dining room. The restaurant began serving food on May 13, 2003
